The Soléo Story

A qualified naturopath, Leo Fung, developed and formulated the original Soléo sunscreen formula in 1999 offering consumers a natural alternative to toxic and synthetic-based sunscreens. Since that time Fung has collaborated with other experts internationally to improve this naturally sourced and organic suncare technology. His on-going research and development  has resulted in the commercial release in August 2005 of the very latest version of his sunscreen– Soléo Organics.

This new and improved formula provides SPF 30+, broadspectrum, 3-hour water resistant protection without the use of chemical UV-absorbers, titanium dioxide or synthetic preservatives. Soleo Organics sunscreen is formulated with all-natural and organic ingredients and fortified with botanical extracts that will moisturize and provide exceptional skin health.

Soléo Organics includes a special form of "nanofine" zinc oxide -- translated this means it will not leave your skin ghostly white like common zinc does. Zinc oxide is now considered the single best broadspectrum natural sunscreen (protecting from UV A and UV B rays)

With the release of this Soleo Organic Natural Sunscreen, Soléo continues to be the world front-leader in providing the most technologically advanced natural organic sunscreen available on the market today.

Ingredient Facts

Beeswax - Derived from the honeycomb cells. It is used as a natural emulsifier. Beexwax has nourishing, moisturizing and softening properties and it is an emollient helping to seal the moisture in the skin. It is also credited with anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and elasticity-enhancing properties.

Candellila Wax - Derived from organic candelilla plants. It is used as a thickening agent and emollient to give products their form.

Capric/caprylic triglycerides: derived from vegetable glycerine and coconut oil. It is considered to be a good emollient and thickening agent.

Cucumber Extract - Obtained from organic cucumber. It is an excellent skin-soother and skin-conditioning ingredient.

Grapeseed Oil - Extracted from organic grape seeds. Bursting with anti-oxidants it helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improves overall skin tone. It has slightly astringent properties and is suitable for all skin types.

Green Tea - Extract from organic green tea leaves. It reduces the risk of irritation and elastin damage and is included to energize, invigorate and uplift! The anti-oxidants in green tea protect the skin from the breakdown of collagen and elastin that occurs after UV-induced sun damage.

Lecithin - Derived from organic plant membranes. It is used for its emollient properties.

Macadamia Oil - Extracted from organic macadamia nuts. It closely resembles oil naturally produced by the skin and supplies emollients to the skin to soften. It is a protective oil with a high absorption rate and can be used for healing scars, sunburns, minor wounds and other irritations.

Roman Chamomile Extract - Derived from roman chamomile plant. It is used for its skin calming properties as it forms an anti-irritant shield on the surface of the skin.

Sunflower Oil - Cold pressed oil extracted from sunflower seeds. It is a non-volatile plant oil and it is used as an emollient. It contains vitamins A, D and E rich in minerals such as calcium zinc, potassium iron and phosphorous.

Theobroma Butter (Cupuassu Butter) - Derived from the seed of the cupuassu tree. It is an emollient that softness and improves the humidity and elasticity of the skin. It also restores the cutaneous barrier.

Tocopheryl Acetate (Natural Vitamin E) - Plant derived. It is a natural anti-oxidant and helps retain optimum skin moisture levels, promoting flexibility and suppleness of the skin.

Vegetable oils - Extracted from organic vegetables. Non-GMO. They nourish and moisturise and have water repellant qualities.

Zinc Oxide - A naturally occurring mineral. Soléo Organics use a special form of “nanofine” zinc oxide, which, unlike common zinc, is much more transparent when applied to the skin. Zinc oxide is a preferred sunscreen active because it is a very stable broadspectrum UV reflector.

Frequently Asked Questions About Soleo Organic Sunscreen

Is Soléo all organic?

Yes, Soléo is made using all natural and organic ingredients, as certified by the suppliers of each of the ingredients used in the formula. It contains no chemical uv-absorbers, no synthetic preservatives and no titanium dioxide.  Instead it contains natural oils, botanical extracts and antioxidants to care for your skin, as it protects.

What ingredients are used in the sunscreen?

Grapeseed oil, macadamia oil, green tea extract, roman chamomile extract, sunflower oil, capric/caprylic triglycerides (plant oil derived), beeswax, theobroma butter, candelilla wax, lecithin, vegetable oils, cucumber extract, tocopheryl acetate (Vitamin E)

ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Zinc oxide 22.3%

What is nanofine zinc?

Soléo Organics sunscreens actually use micronised zinc oxide rather than the ultrafine nano-particles that are used by some companies.

The zinc oxide we use is completely naturally processed with no chemicals used in the process of purification.  It is simply physically milled into a fine powder and dispersed evenly to ensure optimal protection in the product.

Nanofine technology has been on the receiving end of criticism in the media recently, with questions surrounding its safety, in particular with regard to higher absorption rates. Unfortunately these criticisms are not based on any scientific research.

For zinc to be absorbed into the body the particle size would have to be less than 0.1 nanometers, which is 300 times smaller than the commercial grade zinc used in sunscreens.

In addition to this Zinc is a required part or our everyday diet, and, in fact, many people are actually zinc deficient.  Therefore, for argument sake, if there were any small amount of absorption from topical application of zinc, it would probably be more helpful than harmful anyway.

Is it safe to use on babies?

Of course, it is always best to keep babies out of the sun as much as possible. However for times when that isn't possible, we feel our sunscreen is the best alternative for your baby.  Because we have no chemical UV-absorbers, synthetic preservatives, petroleum by-products or essential oils in our sunscreen it is ideal for sensitive young skin.

We just recommend for the first time you use it to try a test patch on your baby - this is good to do with any new product that you use on your baby, just to be cautious.

Is it good for sensitive skin?

Soléo Organics was designed for sensitive skin as all potential irritants, such as chemical uv-absorbers, synthetic preservatives, artificial fragrances, petroleum by-products and essential oils have been excluded.

However, we always recommend people who tend to be allergy-prone to do a test patch first (as with any new products they are using).

Is it suitable for pregnant women?

Yes.

What testing has been done on Soléo Organics?

The Soléo Organics formula has been tested for SPF, water resistance and broadspectrum protection. Tests showed that it was SPF30+ for up to 3 hours in the water and offered very good broad-spectrum protection.  Each batch of sunscreen is then tested to confirm that it passes specification.

Standard microbiological and stability testing has also been conducted on the sunscreen.  The shelf life of the sunscreen is 2 years.

Why don’t you use chemical UV-absorbers?

Chemical UV-absorbers are absorbed very easily into the body and into the bloodstream. We have chosen not to use chemical UV-absorbers in our formula due to international medical research articles that have shown some chemical UV-absorbers have the potential to cause health problems.  There is a medical research website that you might like to visit called http://www.sunscreenresearch.com/ - this outlines various research paper abstracts that have been published in medical journals about the concerns of common sunscreen chemical UV-absorbers.

Chemical sunscreens also have the potential to cause allergic dermatitis and also photoallergic dermatitis. (Photo-allergic dermatitis differs from allergic dermatitis, as the irritation occurs only after the skin comes into direct exposure with the combination of the allergic substance and sunlight.) Physical sunscreens like zinc oxide do not cause this problem.

Why don’t you use synthetic preservatives?

Synthetic preservatives are absorbed very easily into the body and into the bloodstream. We have chosen not to use synthetic preservatives due to international medical research articles that have shown some synthetic preservatives have the potential cause health problems.  Many synthetic preservatives are also skin irritants and can cause itching, burning, redness and/ or swelling of the skin, as well as eczema and acne breakouts.

Why don’t you use titanium dioxide?

Titanium dioxide is absorbed very easily into the body and into the bloodstream.  We have chosen not to use chemical UV-absorbers in our formula due to international medical research articles that have shown that titanium dioxide has the potential to cause health problems.  There is a medical research website that you might like to visit called http://www.sunscreenresearch.com/ - this outlines various research paper abstracts that have been published in medical journals about the concerns of common sunscreen chemical UV-absorbers.

What is the recommended retail price?

$24.95

Why does Soléo Organics cost more than other sunscreens?

It costs a lot more to manufacture Soléo Organics than regular sunscreens.  Organic and naturally sourced ingredients are very expensive, as is the specialised nanofine zinc oxide used.  The Soléo Organics sunscreen formula can cost 4-6 times more than a common synthetic sunscreen.

What size does the sunscreen come in?

2.66 ounces / 80mL tube

What is the shelf life of the product?

The shelf life is 2 years

What is the scent Soléo Organics?

The sunscreen does not contain any fragrances, so the overall scent is simply the combination of natural scents from the ingredients used.

What does the National Health and Safety Council of Australia accreditation mean?

Soléo's Sunscreen is the first of its kind to be accredited by the National Health and Safety Council of Australia (NHSC), illustrating the high quality of our products.  The NHSC is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that helps health and safety conscious consumers choose products that are right for them.

What does SPF mean?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. SPF numbers are an approximate indication of how much protection from the sun the product will provide for your skin.

For any exposure time an SPF30 sunscreen has approximately double the protection time of an SPF15 sunscreen.

ie. For an average person (skin burns after 10 minutes in the sun)

SPF30 = 300 minutes before burning

SPF15 = 150 minutes before burning

What does Broadspectrum mean?

A sunscreen offers broadspectrum protection when it protects against UV-A and UV-B rays.

In the past, UV-B rays were regarded as the main cause of skin cancer. However, the University of Sydney has shown that UV-A radiation plays a large role in causing gene mutations that can lead to skin cancer.  Therefore it is vital that when using a sunscreen you check that it offers broad-spectrum protection.

Yes.

Is Soléo Organics tested on animals?
